Monday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) signed SB 967, the Florida Wildlife Corridor Act, into law.

The signing ceremony took place in Poinciana, Florida.

DeSantis remarked, “Today, we celebrate another milestone of this year’s legislative session, which was a resounding success for Florida’s environment.” Florida’s new law will require the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to promote and encourage investments in areas to protect the Florida Wildlife Corridor. It defines the Corridor as an area of more than 18 million acres.

DeSantis emphasized his commitment to protecting and enhancing Florida’s environment.

The Republican-sponsored environmental bill is not the first of its kind in Florida under a DeSantis governorship. In May, DeSantis signed a bill to strengthen Florida coastlines, shores, and coral reefs. Democrats have stereotypically accused the Republicans, by-and-large, of not caring about the environment. DeSantis is among those breaking that claim.

DeSantis is facing reelection in the 2022 midterms in Florida along with U.S. Senator Marco Rubio.

Polls currently show DeSantis with a very comfortable lead over Democrat hopefuls for Florida governor. FiveThirtyEight, an aggregation site whose polls were heavily Democrat biased in the 2020 election, show DeSantis up 22 points against Nikki Fried and 9 points against Charlie Crist, Democrats.
